Brilliant script and excellent cast respects Fierstein’s Gay Trilogy

In their finest production to date, hubris productions, under the smart staging and direction by Andrew Hogood, have paid homage to the brilliant writing by Harvey Fiersten in his classic gay drama “Torch Song Trilogy.” The play won the 1983 Tony Award for Best Play and for Best Actor for Harvey Fierstein. The hubris production is ‘Jeff Recommended’ and Ryan Jarosch could end up with consideration for his tremendous performance as Arnold—the romantic, sentimental and cynical drag queen. Jarosch captures Arnold in a raspy voice with strong NYC Jewish and swishy mannerism in a tribute to Fierstein’s original Arnold. Jarosch navigates the Neil Simon-ish script filled with stinging one-liners and smart, often hilarious, quips and retorts. His flamboyance masks a true romantic who believes that gay men can have a stable family.

TST 1

In the three part drama (minus part one), Fierstein’s 1970’s drama about gay life is an enduring story of love, loss and hope told through the eyes of Arnold, the lanky torch singing female impersonator. This funny show deftly deals with a gay love affair, a bisexual man who marries a straight girl and the struggles of a gay man who adapts a troubled gay teen. The tension of a Jewish mother who never completely accepts her gay son’s lifestyle heats up when she visits him only to discover that he is raising a teen boy.

TST 3

We meet a cross section of gays from the young hustler, Alan (Evan Linder), Arnold’s lover to Ed (Ben Osbun), Arnold’s former lover now dating Laurel (Mary Hollis Inboden). Arnold emerges not only as the narrator of the play but a spokesman for gay life. He becomes the hero of the story with his compassion, wit and tough spirit. The play is still timely today since the struggle for acceptance by gays continues to be a reality more than 25 years later. The heated son-mother debate emotionally played out by Susan Veronika Adler as Ma breaks home the reality that even family members believe that being gay is a lifestyle choice. Arnold makes a strong argument to debunk that with a mixture of rage and dignity. We see that his refusal to compromise will carry him from tragedy to triumph. The resilience of the human spirit wins.

“Torch Song Trilogy” is a marvelously well acted play that features an outstanding performance from Ryan Jarosch, Susan Veronica Adler, Quinn White (David) and Evan Linder. Hubris productions has mounted one fine drama.
