Patti LuPone sounded terrific with a full symphony orchestra
In a benefit for the JCC (Jewish Community Centers of Chicago), Patti LuPone thrilled the audience with a well sung, charismatic performance. LuPone proves again what a true diva does to entertain an audience. LuPone was at ease and in good spirits as she maneuvered through a surprising array of show tunes with the big sound of a full symphony orchestra. LuPone’s winning smile conveys warmth and sincerity as it is obvious that she loves performing and we love to hear her. I was thrilled to be there. She is a national treasure and the last of the old-time belters.
Patti did songs from Hair; Bye, Bye Birdie; Funny Girl; West Side Story; Peter Pan and, of course Evita and Anything Goes. She nailed the anthem from The Baker’s Wife and demonstrated her style with a rousing version of “My Way.” She did some of the great men’s tunes like “Oh, What A Beautiful Morning,” “Trouble” and “Soliloquy.” Patti never sounded so clear and articulate. Her voice was fresh and sharp. Patti LuPone proves that in order to be a true “diva of the stage,” one must travel outside of Broadway to perform. Patti LuPone come to Chicago each year to Ravina and now she uses her talents to promote the worthy efforts of the JCC. Kudos to her. She is a trooper of the first order.
