Take a walk back in time to the era of the great silent pictures and see this unique medium translated to the stage. 'Lulu,' a black and white silent play,is a one of a kind theatrical experience starring Kyla Louise Webb as Lulu. The backbone of this compelling production is Isaiah Robinson who plays nonstop cues and accompaniment and who also composed the score. In Robinson is a difference from the silent film this piece was modeled on because Robinson is right on the stage with his piano, at times a subtle part of the action.
Lulu, the embodiment of feminine sexuality, passes through brief relationships with a long succession of lovers mostly in Berlin high society, and then reaps the whirlwind in the final scene in London. The romance and despair of Lulu carried a hint of German expressionism, but the sense I took home was the inevitable end of a hedonistic theatrical lifestyle.
'Lulu' is a must see because it is a totally unique Chicago stage experience, but even if it were not unique, you would still want to see this show because the supporting cast play their parts to perfection. My favorite was Marvin Eduardo Quijada as Strong Man, Butler, Vaudevillian Actor, Defense Attorney, and Salvation Army.
Chicago based, Bulgarian born, Tonica Toderova conceived and directed 'Lulu.' As the word spreads about 'Lulu,' artistic directors around town maybe searching for bottles of Bulgarian water. You don't need to look for the water. Just see the show.
