English review

More than a Translation . . . Much More!

The new production of “Hasta los gorriones dejan su nido,” written by Raúl Dorantes, had its world premiere at the Goodman Theatre’s Latino Theatre Festival in August. It received uniform critical acclaim…with good reason. It is much more than a translation of Tennessee Williams’ one-act play, “The Strangest Kind of Romance,” and at the same time it is the most faithful production of that work that there could possibly be. Dorantes has created a new play that brings the essence of Williams’ idea into a contemporary reality with emotion, tenderness, wisdom, and a lyricism that rivals the original. Williams wrote of the trauma of depression era migrant workers, but it is a story that has always existed and continues to the present day in our unusual nation of immigrants. Dorantes and director Macela Muñoz understand this very well and the result is a powerful production.

Alba Guerra is super as the manipulative landlady who takes in renters in her Albany Park (for example) home. She takes them in to pay her mortgage and she takes them in to satisfy her other needs, the ones her invalid husband cannot take care of. Her recently arrived renter (Oswaldo Calderón) finds traces of the multitude of renters who have passed this way written on the walls of his tiny room. She sees him as just another man coming through her house, but in reality this renter has lost even that little bit of dignity through the isolation and disrespect that is the life of those without work, home, or family. He says that he is no longer a person at all. He can only relate to a cat that was left in the room by a Honduran renter who has died.

The plot moves along at a good clip with a number of memorable moments, especially from the landlady and her sister-in-law, played by Rosario Vargas. The sister-in-law is losing her sight because of having worked with caustic chemicals. She imagines a world where everyone has lost their titles, their privileges and their documents – a world where for the first time it is possible to see the true nature of a human being. It is a magic moment.  I have to say that in my opinion the energy of the show is not perfectly even; however, there are enough moments like the sister-in-law’s monologue that the few minor flaws are easily overcome. For my part, “Hasta los gorriones dejan su nido” is a show that is totally worthwhile. It is a well directed show with an outstanding script and a good cast. The ambience at Aguijón Theater is comfortable and cordial and though the show is in Spanish, there is a great summary of the plot in English in the program that makes it accessible to anyone with even a moderate understanding of Spanish. This is a wonderful opportunity if you have been looking for a play to try out your Spanish on. Don’t be shy.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
