The well sung and nicely arranged revue, “God on Broadway” is a strange choice for a cabaret show. It features tunes from such Broadway shows as “Fiddler On The Roof,” “The Color Purple,” “ Big River,” “Nunsense” and “Godspell.” The theme of this revue is God and religion—a curious choice that Whitney Morse, Randolph Johnson, Ben Asaykwee and Bethany Thomas made enjoyable despite so me lame comic bits.
This revue contains terrific arrangements including rich harmonies and stirring solos. Each of the fours talents get their moment to star in this heartfelt songfest. Gary Powell’s piano produces fine accompaniments. Among the features of this 75 minute show are Bethany Thomas’ powerful gospel and bluesy songs. Ben Asykwee’s “Bring Him Home” (from “Les Miz”) and several comic takes by Whitney Morse and Randolph Johnson.
The singing is wonderful—it’s the topic God & Religion I had a problem with. It was a tad too serious for a revue. However, I must say that these four entertainers sang the hell out of their songs. Thank God!
