Thrilling and funny French performance art piece delivers
Chicago Shakespeare Theater’s World’s Stage series brings theatrical works from across the globe to the Chicago Shakespeare Stage at Navy Pier. Farewell__Umbrella (Au Revior Parapluie) is written and directed (and stars) James Thierree—a world class acrobat, trapezist, dancer, mime and violinist. Thierree’s imaginative performance art piece uniquely combines dance, mime, rope style trapeze stunts on special contraptions to offer a visual treat. The work is performed with neo-classical music on a stripped down stage. James Thierree’s has hints of Chaplin--befitting since Thierree is the grandson of Chaplin.

We see James Thierree do mime, climb ropes, dance and do gymnastic movements while his partners—dancer Kaorti Ito, Stachie Noro perform high above the stage in aerial movements that thrill. Matia Sendow singers as Marnus Jakobsson uses his acrobatic and mime skills in a physical punishing mode. The result is a thrilling, often funny, exploration of artistic movement, soaring aerial tricks, exotic dance and cute mime. This engaging show is devoid of dialogue as the energetic dance, quick movements offer enough unpredictable scenes to keep out interest. While some of the bits and scenes were a tad long begging tedium, the over all spectacle showcases world class mimes, acrobats and dancers. This is a thrilling performance piece.
