Nostalgic look back to an innocent world as seen through a nine year old is terrific holiday fare
Based on Jean Shepard’s autobiographical memory of growing up in Hammond, Indiana, A Christmas Story is a cute, funny and nostalgic look at the world of 1948 through the eyes of a nine year old middle class boy whose goal is to get a Red Ryder BB Gun for Christmas. A Christmas Story is fine family fare that kids can easily relate to and adults will find rich humor and found memories. What boy in the 40’s or 50’s didn’t want a BB gun? And who didn’t heard from adults: “You’ll shoot your eyes out!” Ralphie’s adventures play out realistically.
Doug MacKechnie narrates Ralph through his childhood memories and Matthew Levy effectively plays young Ralphie through the emotional world of a nine year old. This show is funny. The cast of children actors did excellent work and the veteran adult actors, Scott Kennedy, as The Old Man, and Heather Townswnd, as Mother, were at their funniest as the “typical middle class American Midwest family.”
This is a heartwarming trip back to a time when life was simple for families. The show has many full houses, so I’d advise reserving tickets soon. The kids in your life will love this pleasant show.
